Creating a Pet Safe Home
Reining Cats and Dogs Pet Sitting
Many people are unaware of the numerous hazards around the house that pose potential dangers to their
pets. Making your home a safer place for your pets can be done easily enough by simply educating
yourself and preventing access to the following list of items.
Common Hazards Inside the Home:
- Human Medications – Both prescription and over the counter medications can be toxic to pets. Be
sure to keep all medication containers stored properly and away from your pets.
- Insecticides – Many over the counter flea and tick remedies contain insecticides that may be toxic to
your pets. Consult your veterinarian before using any products to keep your pet safe.
- Household Cleaners – Items such as bleach, disinfectants, fabric softener, solvents, drain cleaners,
and detergents can all be toxic to pets.
- Rawhide – Rawhide dog chews should only be offered to a pet with supervision as they can pose a
choking hazard.
- Poisonous Household Plants – Many common household plants can be toxic to your pets. Some of
the most common to look out for are Aloe, Azalea, Lilies, Ferns, Honeysuckle, Hydrangea,
Rhododendron, and Wisteria. For a full list of poisonous plants, visit the ASPCA website.
- Toys – Keep an eye on the condition of your pets toys. As they become tattered and torn, throw
them out to avoid potential choking hazards.
- Harmful Foods – Be sure to keep the following foods stored where your pet can’t get to them.
Avocados, Chocolate, Coffee, Onions, Garlic, Grapes, Raisins, Macadamia Nuts, Alcohol , Salt,
Gum, Candies, any foods sweetened with Xylitol, Tea Leaves, and Raw Yeast Dough.
- Misc. Objects – Everybody’s house is full of them. Make sure the following items aren’t left around
the house. Batteries, Buttons, Coins, Cotton Swabs, Glass, Hair Pins, Jewelry, Nylons, Paper Clips,
Plastic Wrap, Socks, Rubber Bands, String, Yarn, Dental Floss, Twist Ties, and any Sharp items
such as knives, razors needles, etc.
Common Hazards Outside the Home:
- Antifreeze/Coolant – Antifreeze or coolant products that contain ethylene glycol are highly toxic to
dogs and cats, even in small amounts. These products have a sweet taste that attracts animals.
Make sure to keep these items securely stored.
- De-icing Salts – They often irritate the paws and can be poisonous if licked off. “Pet Friendly”
products are available.
- Chemicals and Fertilizers – Gasoline, Oils, and Plant Foods should all be kept secure from your pets
to avoid exposure or ingestion.
- Grills and Fire Pits – Not only are these a hazard due to the risk of burns, but ingestion of ashes can
also cause illness.
- Cocoa Mulch – This mulch, sold in garden supply stores, has a chocolate scent and can be deadly if
ingested.
